Count the Burners
Burners equate to horsepower. More is better when it comes to the number of burners on a any gas grill. With more burners comes better heat control. More heat control results in more thorough the cooking. So count the burners.

Porcelain Please
In an ideal grilling world, all portable gas grills would sport porcelain coated over heavy cast iron. Good mass. No rust. Superior heat distribution across the entire surface of the grate. You'll find porcelain performance is superior

too when you consider the lack of maintenance (constant seasoning) or rust issues. Just remember to give 'em a quick whack with a brass brush before and after each use and you're good.

Grade the Grates
Better grates are closely spaced. Keeps your fish or veggies or other delicates from falling through? Sacrificed to the grilling gods.

Side Burner Savvy
Some love 'em. Some don't use em. Side burners are a great way to sauté up some onions or peppers fast over high heat. Or used as a warming plate. All in all probably a good to have. But don't go making any portable gas grills decision based on the side burners.

Rate the racks Upscale grills have warming racks. Lets you keep food warm without drying out. Or for toasting buns? Nice to have. Like a side burner don't let this be a deal breaker.
